How To Hang Your Bike In A Shed

If you’re low on space, you might have considered storing your bike – or bikes – vertically in your garden shed. However, sometimes, storing your bike vertically is not as easy as it looks.

Keep reading to discover a step-by-step guide on how to successfully store your bike vertically, and other vertical bike storage ideas.

How To Hang A Bike In A Shed

Hanging your bike vertically is considered one of the most space-efficient methods of storage, as it will keep floor space clear. However, before you jump in and start to install hooks and racks, etc., you first need to consider if your shed is a strong enough structure to hold your bike(s).

Once you have verified the structural integrity of your shed or you’ve improved its strength, follow the steps below to store your bike vertically.

Vertical Wall Mounting

Storing your bike on the wall vertically involves hanging the bike perpendicular to the wall by its front or rear wheel. It might sound as though it would take a lot of effort, but it can actually be pretty easy.

What you’ll need:

1.  Locate Shed Studs

The vertical framing of a shed (AKA the studs) is usually exposed, making them easy to spot. These studs are where you will hang your bike.

2. Mark The Height Of Your Bike

Stand your bike vertically against the wall, using its rear wheel as a stand. Where the front tyre touches the stud, add 2-3 inches extra and mark this on the wall.

3. Drill A Pilot Hole

With a drill bit that is roughly ⅔ of the diameter of the hook’s threaded end, drill a hole directly into the centre of the stud, where you have marked. Ensure you drill into the centre of the stud to prevent splitting the wood.

4. Install The Hook

Hand-screw the hook into the hole you’ve just created. Ensure it is securely in place before hanging your bike from it.

And that’s it! Repeat this process if you are hanging more than one bike – but ensure you leave space between the hooks so the bikes fit neatly without bashing against one another.

Ceiling Hoist

A ceiling hoist is only good for sheds with high ceilings or heavy bikes that will be hard to lift onto a wall-mounted hook.

What you’ll need:

1. Measure Your Bike

First, measure the distance between the bike’s handlebars and the back of its seat. This will ensure that the ceiling brackets will be spaced correctly to hold your bike. Mark out the bike’s length on the ceiling joists. If the joists don’t match up with your bike, move to step 2; if they do match up, skip to step 3.

2. Secure A Mounting Board (If Needed)

Using a 2×4 wooden board, screw it across two or more joists on your ceiling if the length of your bike does not match the length of your ceiling joists.

3. Attach The Hoist

Attach the hoist to your ceiling joists using lag bolts.

4. Thread The Rope

Thread the rope by following the specific pulley path included with your kit, and ensure the hooks face inward toward each other.

5. Install The Rope Cleat

The rope cleat is where you will tie off the excess rope once the bike is hoisted securely. To do this, mount the cleat at shoulder height on a wall stud.

6. Test the Hoist

This is probably one of the most important steps. Once you have installed every part of the hoist, hook the handlebars and seat of your bike and begin to pull the rope in short, gentle strokes. This will allow you to recognise any issues and test if the hoist will hold your bike.

Garage Storage

If you have a garage, you may have considered using it to store your bike upright. This can be a great storage solution, and the above two methods – vertical wall mount and a ceiling hoist – can be applied in a garage. However, ensure you still have enough room for your car so you don’t cause damage to either your vehicle or your bike.

Vertical Bike Sheds

If your shed can’t hold the weight of your bike in either of the above options, or you don’t want the hassle of installing wall mounts and pulley systems by yourself, a vertical bike shed might be the perfect solution.

A vertical bike shed is already pre-built with hooks and racks that will securely hold your bike(s) in place. Our range of vertical storage solutions at Brighton Bike Sheds is compact, built with strong timber and galvanised steel hinges, scres, bolts, and locks to ensure maximum security for your bike too. Plus, you can choose from a felt or a green roof, so it will blend in perfectly with your garden!

Vertical Bike Storage FAQs

How Do I Hang My Bike In My Shed?

To hang your bike in your shed, you can use one of the two options: vertical wall mounting or a ceiling hoist. With vertical wall mounting, you will attach hooks to the studs of your shed walls to hold the bike perpendicular against the wall. A ceiling hoist will store your bike in the air with a pulley system.

Alternatively, you can opt for a vertical bike shed that is already prebuilt with vertical storage space for your bike(s), and made from sturdy materials to ensure a long-life and maximum security.

How Big Are Your Vertical Bike Sheds?

Our vertical bike sheds come in different sizes, depending on how many bikes you need to store (1-6 bikes). They are compact and built to blend in with your space. Design the perfect vertical bike shed for your needs with Brighton Bike Sheds.

Can You Hang More Than One Bike From One Hook?

No, you cannot hang more than one bike from one hook. Not only will this probably not be possible as both bikes will not fit, but it could also put strain on the studs of your shed and damage its integrity.

Is Storing My Bike In A Shed Secure?

If your shed is of high-quality and has a good locking system, it should be perfectly secure to store your bike in there. However, if you’re worried about security, you might want to invest in a dedicated bike shed that has a focus on security, such as the vertical bike shed from Brighton Bike Sheds.
