A Complete Guide to Choosing A Bike Shed

When you purchase a bike, storing it may not be at the top of your list of priorities. However, ensuring you have safe and secure storage for your bike that also stops it from being damaged is important.

Knowing what to look for when choosing your bike shed will help ensure you get the best storage option for your needs, so we have put together this guide to help you with everything you need to know when you are choosing your bike shed.

Measuring Your Space for A Bike Shed

The first thing you need to do when you are thinking about a shed for your bike is to determine how much space you have available for it. You can do this by measuring your space and noting down the dimensions you have. This is especially important if you have limited space or obstructions such as a bay window that you need to fit your shed around.

We have designed our bike sheds to be as compact as possible so that they fit into the tightest spaces, whilst being spacious inside with easy access. Please carefully check the dimensions of the bike sheds against the dimensions of your space before ordering.

If your preferred space is tight you should make sure that there is some wriggle room (of ~5cm) on both sides with at least 80cm of space in front of the doors to allow them to open fully.

To help you visualise your shed in situ we have created an augmented reality tool. Find out more about this process here.

Choosing A Bike Shed Based on Number of Bikes

The first consideration for choosing your bike shed is the number of bikes you want to store. Naturally, the more bikes you need to store, the bigger the bike shed you’ll need. However, all of our sheds are designed to be as compact as possible whilst also offering ample storage for your bikes.

The Best Bike Sheds for Multiple Bikes and a Compact space

If you have multiple bikes and a compact space such as front garden, your best option is our classic bike sheds. These versatile sheds can fit up to 6 bikes and can fit the whole family’s bikes. These sheds are the most compact of our products and can be customised to fit underneath bay windows.

We also offer complete customisation of our classic sheds, which means you’ll be able to get the exact space for the number of bikes you are storing by adding for example a 2m side store, effectively doubling up.

Choosing A Bike Shed Based on easy access

Another way you can choose your bike shed is based on easy  access for each bike . This requires a larger sized shed which is designed around individual access for each bike such as the Slot-in bike shed. This shed has a larger footprint and requires a larger space such as a larger front garden or a back garden.. Whatever your space requirements, Brighton Bike Sheds have the ideal shed for you.

For those who want extra space to store things other than bikes, we have optional add-ons that can increase the space of a shed. From additional storage for wheelie bins to logs, we have options that can maximise the space in your garden without compromising on the design.

We also stock oversized cargo bike sheds for larger bikes. These large bike sheds are designed to fit large or XL bikes, including cargo bikes that are up to 2.8m long, with additional space for garden equipment such as lawnmowers or garden tools. Our sheds can also be customised to fit any oversized bike you require.

The Best Bike Sheds for Small back yards

For back gardens with smaller or limited spaces, the best shed that we stock here at Brighton Bike Sheds is our vertical bike shed. Our vertical bike sheds are designed for urban environments with less space, and allow you to store your bikes upright to reduce the depth that is required, saving you space in your garden.

Vertical bike sheds can store up to six bikes in a compact shed, making them the ideal solution for any space constrictions you may have. they also allow for easy access, in that the bikes can be stored separately.

Bike Shed Security

Here at Brighton Bike Sheds, all of our sheds are designed with security and safety in mind. We have three elements that make the sheds secure, which are our heavy-duty galvanised hinges, our SecureBar, and our nailed-on cladding, for a complete security package for your shed.

Robust Door Hinges: We use heavy-duty galvanised T-hinges, fitted externally using galvanised steel security screws. A pair of 200m galvanised bolts lock off the secondary door internally. Turning the key on the primary door extends a hardened steel long-throw bolt behind the secondary door. The lock itself is coach bolted to the door frame to deter the use of crowbars.

SecureBar: A thick-walled galvanised steel tube fitted into the frame on the back shed wall. It would require noisy power tools to cut through it. Our SecureBar is easy to lock bikes to using your D-locks (Classic, Vertical units), or a security chain and padlock that runs through all the bikes. (Or best of all, a combination of both chain and D-locks). We fit this as standard on all our sheds.

Timber cladding: Timber cladding is firmly nailed on in three rows. Removal of it is made impossible by the roof overhang, which clamps the cladding in place around the top. Slatted cladding is given an additional run of lost head screws alongside the existing screws to deter the prising off of slats. The doors are given an extra layer of fixings and are nailed through the back and front.
