How big should a bike shed be?

Classic bike shed illustrating bike shed size
When you are choosing or building a bike shed, you may not know what size to choose, especially if you have a more custom bike or multiple bikes. As bikes come in many shapes and sizes, and because UK gardens are infamously small (especially here in Brighton…), you should consider the bike shed dimensions very carefully when shopping for a bike shed. Choosing the right bike shed size is one of the most important decisions when planning your garden storage. Too small, and you will struggle to fit your bikes comfortably. Too large, and you may waste valuable outdoor space. You can also add optional extras if you are ordering from Brighton Bike Sheds, enhancing your outdoor bike storage space.

In this guide, we explain:

Bike shed dimensions explained

As a starting point, here are the dimensions from our Compact Classic Bike Shed range:

Number of Adult Bikes

Shed Size

(Length x Width)

1 bike2m x 0.8m
2 bikes2m x 0.9m
3 bikes2m x 1m
4 bikes2m x 1.15m
5 bikes2m x 1.25m
6 bikes2m x 1.35m

These sizes are designed to store bikes efficiently while keeping your garden footprint down to a minimum (with a few centimetres either side for drainage, which we will address further down). If you are storing larger bikes, such as mountain bikes, electric bikes or cargo bikes, you may require additional depth or height.

You also need to consider how much you need to store in your garden to help you select your shed. If you need to store more than just your bike, then selecting a bike shed that can also accommodate shelf space is important.

You can also consider adding log and bin storage to your shed to ensure you are maximising the storage options available to you. Having storage add-ons can also mean that your shed can save you from having extra furniture in your garden, which can also increase your outdoor space.

How much space does a bike take up?

A standard adult bike typically measures:

  • Length: 1.7m to 1.9m,
  • Handlebar width: 60cm to 70cm,
  • Height: typically no more than 1m.

When planning bike shed dimensions, you must also allow:

  • Clearance for handlebars,
  • Space to manoeuvre bikes in and out,
  • Room to open the bike shed doors fully.

This is why simply matching bike length to shed length is not enough. Practical access space is just as important as internal dimensions.

The correct bike shed dimensions depend on 4 key factors

Choosing the right bike shed size is not just about measuring your bike. The correct dimensions depend on how the shed will actually be used day to day.

There are four key factors to consider before deciding on the width, depth and height of your bike shed.

  • The Number of Bikes You Are Storing
  • The Type of Bikes You Own
  • Access and Layout Inside the Shed
  • Any Additional Storage Requirements

Choosing the right bike shed size is not just about measuring your bike. The correct dimensions depend on how the shed will actually be used day to day.

There are four key factors to consider before deciding on the width, depth and height of your bike shed.

  • The Number of Bikes You Are Storing
  • The Type of Bikes You Own
  • Access and Layout Inside the Shed
  • Any Additional Storage Requirements

1. The Number of Bikes You Are Storing

Multi bike storage

This is the starting point for all sizing decisions.

Each additional bike increases the required internal width. While bikes can sit close together, you still need enough space to wheel them in and out without catching handlebars or pedals.

If your household may grow its collection in future, it is often sensible to allow for one additional bike at the planning stage.

2. The Type of Bike

Not all bikes are the same size.

Standard adult bikes typically fit comfortably within compact shed dimensions. However, you may need extra space if you own:

  • Mountain bikes with wider handlebars
  • Electric bikes with bulkier frames
  • Cargo bikes with extended length
  • Bikes with child seats or baskets

In these cases, slightly increasing the shed width or height can make daily access much easier.

3. Access and Layout Inside the Shed

Internal layout affects usable space as much as raw measurements.

Ask yourself:

  • Will bikes be used daily or occasionally?
  • Do you need to move one bike to access another?
  • Is there enough clearance to open doors fully?

Allowing a small amount of additional width for manoeuvring can prevent long-term frustration. Practical access is just as important as internal storage capacity.

4. Any Additional Storage Requirements

Many bike sheds end up storing more than just bikes.

You may also want space for:

If this is the case, the overall dimensions may need to increase slightly, or you may wish to choose a model with integrated side storage or height upgrades.

Planning this at the outset ensures your shed remains functional for years rather than feeling restrictive once installed.

Which bike sheds are best for your needs?

Best bike sheds for multiple bikes

The best bike sheds for multiple bikes are vertical bike sheds. These sheds can accommodate multiple bikes in less space, so they provide you with the storage you need without the need for a cumbersome shed taking up space in your garden.

Most classic bike sheds are also suitable for multiple bikes, and our entire range of bike sheds can be made to accommodate the number of bikes you need.

Best bike sheds for extra storage

The best bike sheds for extra storage are our range of classic sheds. These sheds have the most add-on options, and they can also accommodate multiple add-ons.

These add-ons include:

  • Side Storage: For equipment, tools, or anything that you want to keep secure.
  • Bin Storage: Which will help keep your outdoor bins safe and secure.
  • Log Storage: To keep your logs dry and under shelter.
  • Bay Window: Which fits snuggly around a bay window alcove.
  • Plus Height: Adding additional height gives you an additional 300mm and can accommodate very tall bikes, but also gives you an option to add an interior shelf
  • Reverse Pitch Roof: A reverse pitch roof can allow you to change the way that your bike shed drains.

Another option for bike sheds with additional storage is cargo bike sheds. These sheds are purposely designed to accommodate bigger bikes and more storage.

Why choose Brighton Bike Sheds over a standard off the shelf shed?

Unlike mass-produced garden sheds, Brighton Bike Sheds are purpose-built specifically for storing bikes efficiently.

Our dimensions are calculated around real bike measurements rather than generic garden storage sizing. We also offer add ons such as bin storage, log storage, reverse pitch roofing and Plus Height upgrades. Yes. Brighton Bike Sheds installs across Brighton and the surrounding Sussex area.We also offer installtion on London and many other areas in the South of England.

Our sheds are built to withstand coastal weather conditions and are designed with proper drainage and durable materials. Professional installation ensures correct positioning, stability and longevity. If you are located outside our main service area, contact us to discuss options.

Electric bikes, cargo bikes and mountain bikes often require additional width or height due to wider handlebars, extended frames or bulkier components.

Brighton Bike Sheds offers cargo bike sheds specifically designed for larger bikes, as well as height upgrades and width adjustments within our classic range. If you provide the measurements of your bike, we can advise on the most suitable shed configuration.

The Cargo Bike Shed measures 1.55m Height, and 2.5m / 3m Depth, and the width varies depending on how many bikes you need to store.

  • 1 Bike – 1.44m
  • 2 Bikes – 1.8m
  • 3 Bikes – 2.01m

Be sure to double-check the size of your space before ordering to ensure the shed fits.

Our published dimensions refer to the overall shed footprint. Internal space is carefully designed to maximise usable width while allowing small clearances for airflow and drainage.

We always recommend allowing a few extra centimetres around the shed for installation access and water runoff. If you need exact internal measurements for a specific model, our team can provide these before you order.

Yes. All of our classic bike sheds can be customised to suit your specific requirements.

You can adjust the width to allow for larger bikes, add Plus Height for additional clearance, or incorporate side storage, bin storage or log storage. Because we manufacture our sheds ourselves, we are able to modify dimensions while maintaining structural integrity and proper drainage. This ensures your shed remains durable, secure and practical for long term use.

Choosing the correct bike shed size depends on more than just the number of bikes you own. At Brighton Bike Sheds, we assess bike length, handlebar width, daily access requirements and any additional storage needs before recommending dimensions.

Our Compact Classic Bike Shed range provides clearly defined sizes for 1 to 6 bikes, but we also offer fully customisable options if your garden layout is unusual. If you are unsure, our team can guide you through the measurements to ensure your shed fits comfortably without wasting valuable outdoor space.

We do. In-fact, The Cargo is only supplied as an installed product due to the complexity of the installation. Our Full Installation package is £316, plus additional charges based on your chosen size.

For a successful installation, The Cargo requires a level base. If we are unable to install due to the ground being unprepared we reserve the right to re-book the installation and still charge the initial installation fee. Good planning and images of the site will prevent this from occurring.

The current lead times are 8-10 weeks across our product range; this is because we build them ourselves in our workshop. Once you order, we’ll send a confirmation with an estimated delivery date, and/or installation slot.

Please note that the lead time varies depending on the time of year; during periods of higher demand, it can extend to 12 weeks.
