How to Secure Your Bike in a Shed

Hinges used to secure your bike

Bike security is vital when you are selecting your bike shed. Sheds should be safe and secure, and it should be easy to secure your bike in a shed. The best way to secure your bike in a shed is through locking your bike to an immovable object.

When you are choosing your bike shed, looking at the security features is important. Sheds with added security features are best for keeping your bike protected from being stolen, and they are also great for the safety of your other stored items.

Tips for Securing Your Bike in a Shed

The biggest tip for securing your bike in a shed is to make sure the shed has multiple security features to keep it secure and stop thieves. Security is fundamental to every product we make, and we build security in layer by layer as standard.

The two lines of security in our sheds come as standard for your bike. Our sheds feature both internal locking points, and external doors secured with a throw bolt, which is operated with high security keys. For the external lock, we recommend a 2m long chain such as the Oxford OF160 HD Chain Lock, which can live happily inside your shed.

Other tips include:

There are certain features that should always be included in a bike shed to keep it secure, such as heavy-duty galvanised hinges, and secure locks. Our hinges are heavy-duty galvanised T-hinges fitted externally using security ‘one-way’ screws. T-hinges are extremely sturdy and do a great job in supporting the considerable weight of the doors. The security clutch screws used to fix the hinges can only be tightened, never loosened.

We also use secure long-throw bolts that are fitted internally. Turning the key extends a hardened steel bolt across the back of the internally bolted door. The locks come with a set of 4 security keys and the key-holes are finished with a circular key plate. On double-doored sheds, the left-hand door bolts shut at the top and bottom. This firmly secures the left door before the right-hand door closes, and both doors lock. We use 150mm heavy-duty galvanised bolts.

The doors are given an extra layer of fixings and are nailed through the back and front. In addition, slatted doors are given two rows of lost head screws. We provide an over-hang on the roof: the roof extends over the doors by 40mm, which is enough to make it impossible to manoeuvre a crow-bar or similar tool behind the doors.

Internal security for bike storage

Internal second-line security is covered by our SecureBar, a 32mm thick galvanised steel bar which is drilled into the frame on the back wall inside the shed. It would require power tools to cut through it. The bar is easy to lock bikes on to with your U-locks, or a 2m or 1.8m long motorcycle type chain running through all the bikes inside (or best of all, a combination of both). The SecureBar is a standard feature fitted on all our sheds.

To further enhance the security of your doors, we can fix a galvanised steel mesh with 25mm holes to the back. This is a strong barrier that would require an angle grinder to cut through, and can be seen though the gaps in slatted doors, making it a visual deterrent for any thief.

We can also install a movement-activated alarm in your shed. The alarm is armed/disarmed using a simple remote control key fob. Adding a small sign to the front of your shed will let would-be intruders know there’s an alarm inside.
