What is the best cladding for your bike shed?

Scottish larch bike shed cladding option

When it comes to cladding your shed, there are various options for you to choose from, each offering its own set of benefits. While there are numerous options, there are some options that are better than others.

In this article, we will discuss the different options for cladding, as well as what the best cladding for your bike shed is and why.

Bike shed cladding options

There are many cladding options you can have on your shed. Most materials can be used for cladding, including timber, aluminium, stone, composite, uPVC, glass, and more. Each of these types of cladding have their own advantages and disadvantages, and they may not all be right for a bike shed.

For example, some types of cladding such as stone or composite may be more expensive. Choosing a sustainable, hard-wearing cladding such as our cedar cladding options ensures you have all your bases covered.

The best cladding for your bike shed

At Brighton Bike Sheds, we believe that timber is the best cladding option for bike sheds. Timber is sustainable and can be responsibly sourced, it’s a natural insulator and extremely durable, and it is more cost-effective than brick and fibre cladding.

We use a variety of timbers for our cladding, and we select these timbers based on their characteristics and sustainability.

Cladding options from Brighton Bike Sheds

We offer a number of different types of timber cladding to suit all tastes. Our range includes Scottish Larch, Pine T&G, Pine slats, Painted slats, Cedar slats, Cedar T&G, and Charred Scottish larch (Shou Sugi Ban). We also offer a Corten steel clad range of sheds.

We use a vertical cladding installation method for all of our cladding options to allow any wind-driven rain to run quickly down and off the shed to help prevent discolouration, rot, and failure of the cladding.

Scottish Larch

Scottish Larch is by far our most popular cladding. It meets all the criteria for a Brighton Bike Shed: natural durability, aesthetics, affordability and sustainability. Scottish Larch contains a high level of natural oils. Over time these oils rise to the surface and form a patina or natural protective skin.

We offer Scottish larch that is preserved using the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban method. This ancient Japanese wood-preserving technique creates a stunning look and the carbonised surface layer makes the cladding even more resistant to pests and moisture.

Pine T&G or Pine Slats

Pine T&G offers a precise look. With the Natural option, the timber preservative treatment colour fades to a beautiful silvery-grey over time. The boards are 122 x 16mm in section and are fixed with galvanised steel nails. All trims/facias are of a thicker 27 x 97mm section and square-edged.

Pine Slats are fixed vertically using galvanised nails with 6mm gaps. The affect is architecturally striking, creating a strong light and shade contrast.  We offer this cladding to fit seamlessly alongside any contemporary garden design.

The gaps between the slats allow for very good airflow, so the odd drop of rain that blows in won’t be an issue. Over time, the treatment colour fades and the wood softens to a beautiful silvery-grey colour.

Cedar Slats or T&G

While the visual effect is similar to the treated pine slats, Western Red Cedar is a premium timber cladding. The tightness of the grain, natural durability and refined appearance makes this an extremely high quality option. It comes with a price to match.

Western Red Cedar does not require treatment as it contains high natural levels of oil and tannins, which are present in the wood even after UV weathering.
