Cargo Bike Storage: Solutions for Oversized Cycles

Cargo bikes need 2.5 to 3 metre deep storage to accommodate extended frames, child seats, and panniers. Standard 2 metre bike sheds cannot fit cargo bikes’ length. Purpose-built cargo bike sheds offer 2.5 metre or 3 metre depth with wide door openings for bulky accessories, plus security features for bikes worth £2,000 to £6,000 and above.

Why Standard Sheds Don't Work

Standard adult bikes measure around 180cm front to back. Cargo bikes are a different category:

  • Longtails (Tern GSD, Yuba Spicy Curry, Surly Big Dummy): 220 to 250cm long
  • Front-loaders (Urban Arrow Family, Babboe, Christiania models): 240 to 280cm long
  • Mid-tails (Tern HSD, Benno Boost): 200 to 220cm long

In a standard 2m shed, the extended frame hits the back wall before the doors can close. Electric cargo bikes add motors and battery systems, bringing total weight to 50kg or more and increasing both the value at risk and the need for stable, weatherproof storage.

Outdoor covers offer no security and trap moisture against the frame. Garage storage works where a full bay is available and the door opening is wide enough, but cargo box widths of 70 to 90cm can exceed standard garage openings. A purpose-built cargo shed solves both problems without compromise.

The Cargo Bike Shed

The Cargo Bike Shed is available in two depths: 2.5m and 3.0m. Both use FSC-certified Scottish Larch or Red Cedar cladding and the same security hardware as the rest of the range. The defining feature of this model is a sliding roof panel on heavy-duty stainless steel runners, which provides top-loading access for front-loaders and wider cargo boxes where manoeuvring through the front doors requires extra effort.

Width scales across three capacities per depth option, from 1410mm (1 bike) to 1980mm (3 bikes). Front height is 1580mm, stepping to 1315mm at the rear. At 1580mm tall, the shed sits comfortably below the 2.5m permitted development height limit, allowing placement near boundaries in most gardens without requiring planning permission.

Choosing Your Depth: 2.5m or 3.0m

Measure your bike’s total length including any rear extension or front cargo box, then add 50cm for access clearance.

If your bike sits at the upper end of the longtail range, or you are deciding between the two, choose the 3.0m. The additional 500mm costs less over time than a shed that fits too tightly for comfortable daily use.

Choice of green roof (EPDM liner) or felt roof. FSC-certified Scottish Larch or Red Cedar throughout.

Base requirement: Concrete slab or level existing paving covering the full footprint. Eco-bases are not suitable given the weight of cargo bikes and the large structure size. Professional installation covers South East England and surrounding areas, with lead times of 8 to 10 weeks, extending to 12 weeks during peak periods.

Security

Cargo bikes are high-value, recognisable, and used on predictable daily schedules, which makes them attractive targets. The shed provides the first layer: locked doors and a hidden bike remove the opportunistic element entirely. Use two D-locks on the internal SecureBar, one through frame and front wheel, one through frame and rear wheel. Many home insurance policies require secure locked storage for bikes valued above £1,500; a purpose-built shed with a five-key long-throw lock typically satisfies that requirement. Motion sensor lighting covering the shed entrance adds deterrence without ongoing effort.

E-Cargo Bike Battery Storage

Lithium-ion batteries perform best between 10 and 20°C and should not drop below 0°C or exceed 40°C for sustained periods. Timber construction moderates temperature swings better than single-skin metal sheds, making it adequate for year-round active use. For bikes left unused over winter, charge the battery to 40 to 60 percent and bring it indoors if your garden regularly drops below freezing.

If a Cargo Shed Won't Fit

If your garden cannot accommodate 2.5m or more of available depth, three alternatives are worth considering.

A compact cargo bike. The Tern HSD at 180cm fits a standard 2m shed with minimal clearance. The Brompton Electric folds to 58cm and stores anywhere. Carrying capacity is reduced, but storage becomes straightforward.

Split storage. If you own a mix of standard bikes and one cargo bike, a Vertical Bike Shed or Classic Bike Shed for the standard bikes alongside a garage or covered space for the cargo bike can be more practical than one large structure.

Shared storage. In terraced streets or flat developments, communal cargo bike storage between neighbours distributes the footprint and cost across multiple households who each benefit from the capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Cargo 2.5 provides 2.4m of internal depth. Allowing 20cm of rear clearance, it comfortably accommodates bikes up to around 220cm. Longtails up to 240cm can fit with tighter clearance. Extended longtails and front-loaders above 240cm need the 3.0m model.

Yes. The 3-bike width provides 1880mm of internal space, which can fit one cargo bike alongside one or two standard bikes depending on their combined handlebar widths. Measure each bike at its widest point and confirm the total fits within the internal width with adequate clearance between them.

In most cases, no. At 1580mm, the shed sits well below the 2.5m height limit for structures within 2m of a boundary under permitted development rules. Listed buildings, conservation areas, flats, and properties subject to Article 4 directions are exceptions. Check with your local planning authority if any of those apply.
