Bike Security and Insurance: A Complete Guide
Secure bike storage at home works in layers. A structurally sound shed with good construction resists forced entry. The SecureBar inside provides a fixed locking point for your bikes. Where your insurer requires it, a ground anchor rated to Sold Secure Gold adds a permanent fixing point independent of the shed structure. This guide covers how each layer works and what to look for when evaluating your setup.
Why shed security works in layers
No single feature makes a bike shed secure. What makes it effective is the combination: a structure that resists forced entry, a door system that cannot be silently defeated, an internal locking point for the bikes themselves, and optional upgrades for situations where higher-value bikes or insurer requirements demand more.
Each layer addresses a different attack vector. Construction features deal with opportunistic forced entry. The door lock and drop bolts stop the doors being opened without a key. The SecureBar means a thief who did get inside would still need to defeat the lock holding the bike. Optional upgrades extend that stack further, adding deterrence, noise, or permanent anchor points depending on what the situation calls for.
The sections below cover each layer in turn. Security features are not repeated in the FAQ or the closing section.
What to look for in a secure bike shed
The construction details that matter most are those that eliminate the quiet, fast attack. Every shed in the Brighton Bike Sheds range includes the following as standard.
Heavy-duty galvanised T-hinges are fitted externally using one-way security screws. These screws can be tightened but never loosened, so the hinges cannot be removed from outside the shed. The roof overhangs the doors by 40mm, which is enough to make it impossible to manoeuvre a crowbar or similar tool behind them. Timber cladding is nailed on in three rows and clamped in place at the top by that same roof overhang, preventing removal. Slatted cladding has an additional run of lost-head screws, and the doors are nailed through back and front.
The door lock is a long-throw bolt fitted internally. Turning the key extends a hardened steel bolt across the back of the internally bolted door. The lock comes with 4 security keys. On double-door models, which includes all Classic Bike Sheds and the 4-6 bike Slot-In and Vertical configurations, 100mm heavy-duty galvanised drop bolts secure the left-hand door at the top and bottom before the right-hand door closes.
These features are built into every shed in the timber bike shed range as standard.
The SecureBar: the internal locking point
The SecureBar is a 32mm thick galvanised steel bar drilled into the frame on the back wall inside the shed. It provides a fixed point for U-locks or a chain running through all the bikes stored inside. Cutting through it requires power tools. It is a standard feature on every shed Brighton Bike Sheds makes.
Optional upgrades: extending the security stack
Four optional extras are available at checkout, each addressing a specific aspect of the security setup.
The extra lock (£60) adds a second locking point on the door, keyed alike to the first. Both locks are evenly spaced over the height of the door and provide a visual deterrent to anyone approaching the shed.
The steel mesh door lining (£245 per unit) is a galvanised steel mesh with 25mm holes, fixed to the back of the doors. It is a strong barrier that would require an angle grinder to cut through, and is visible through the gaps in slatted doors, acting as a deterrent. The price is per unit; one is needed per shed and per add-on unit.
The movement-activated alarm (£75) is fitted inside the shed and triggers at 125dB. It is armed and disarmed by remote key fob. A sign on the front of the shed lets would-be thieves know the alarm is in place before they get close.
The 2-metre chain lock (£40) is designed for use with the SecureBar, giving a ready-to-use internal locking solution without a separate purchase.
Which combination makes sense depends on the value of the bikes stored and what your insurer requires. A high-value bike stored in an urban area may benefit from the full stack. A single commuter bike may need nothing beyond the standard features.
Ground anchors: permanent fixing for high-value bikes
A ground anchor provides a permanent fixing point inside the shed that is independent of the shed structure itself. Some insurers require an angle grinder-resistant anchor or a Sold Secure Gold-rated anchor to meet their policy conditions for high-value bikes.
Brighton Bike Sheds offers a fitting service at £85 per anchor. Compatible options include the Hiplok AX1000 and Oxford Beast Ground Anchor, both of which are angle grinder-resistant. If you have a specific anchor model in mind, contact Brighton Bike Sheds to confirm compatibility.
Installation involves cutting a circular opening in the timber floor and mounting the anchor into the concrete base beneath. A concrete base is required; the fitting cannot be carried out on any other base type. You will need to purchase your own anchor and have it available on the day of installation. The fitting fee is invoiced separately. To arrange installation, notify Brighton Bike Sheds after placing your shed order so the anchor fitting can be scheduled alongside shed installation.
The Sold Secure rating system explained
Sold Secure is an independent testing body that rates security products at Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels. The Gold standard is the most stringent and is what most specialist cycle insurers specify as a minimum for high-value bikes stored at home.
Brighton Bike Sheds cites the Hiplok AX1000 and Oxford Beast Ground Anchor as suitable where an insurer requires a Sold Secure Gold-rated anchor. For full detail on what insurers require and which policies apply the Gold standard as a condition, see our supporting article on cycle insurance requirements.
How secure storage affects your cycle insurance
Most specialist cycle insurance policies set a minimum locking or storage standard for bikes kept at home. What qualifies as secure storage, which anchors are accepted, and whether a shed alone meets policy conditions varies by insurer and policy level. Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the insurer and the policy. Many specialist cycle insurers accept a locked timber bike shed as qualifying secure storage, but some require additional conditions, such as a Sold Secure Gold-rated ground anchor for bikes above a certain value. Check your policy wording directly, and contact your insurer if you are unsure whether your shed setup meets the stated requirement.
Yes, provided the shed is installed on a concrete base. The fitting service requires a solid concrete foundation for the anchor fixings to work correctly. If your shed sits on any other base type, installation is not possible. To arrange a retrofit fitting, contact Brighton Bike Sheds directly after confirming your base type.
Not always. Many policies do not require one, particularly for lower-value bikes or standard cover levels. Where it does become relevant is with specialist cycle insurance policies for higher-value bikes, where some insurers specify a Sold Secure Gold-rated ground anchor as a condition. Check your policy before purchasing an anchor to avoid fitting something that does not meet your insurer's specific requirement.
A locked timber shed with a SecureBar provides solid baseline protection. For higher-value e-bikes, the most effective combination is a shed with the standard security features, a quality U-lock or chain through the SecureBar, and a ground anchor installed into the concrete base below. Where an insurer covers an e-bike on a specialist policy, check whether they require a Sold Secure Gold-rated anchor as a condition. The movement-activated alarm adds an audible deterrent layer that is particularly relevant for expensive e-bikes stored in accessible locations.
